WILLIAMSPORT — In one of the few midweek matchups on the schedule this season, Logan Elm rode three pins and five forfeits to a 48-29 win over Westfall Wednesday night.

Cole Renier got the first pin of the night for the Braves as he took down Christian Furniss in 1:02 at 106 pounds. Peyton Bennett pinned Westfall’s Trenton Page in 2:49 at 145 pounds. LE’s Luke Linton had the fastest pin of the night as he beat Andrew Browning in 38 seconds at 170 pounds.

“Some of our guys didn’t get matches, but head-to-head they pretty much kicked our butts in the matches we did wrestle,” LE coach Jake Daniels said. “Although some of our guys were bumped around and not at the weights they normally wrestle, still it’s a match.

“The big match was Dylan (Hartranft) and (Chanston) Moll at 26,” Daniels said. Moll came out on top 5-1 last night after posting a 4-3 win Saturday to claim the 120-pound tournament title at the Logan Elm Invitational Saturday. “It was still a tight match. It didn’t go the way we wanted it to but, overall, there were some bright spots to it.

“Some of our younger guys got good matches in, which was something we needed to get for them.”

The Mustangs recorded three pins as Rex Brown defeated Ethan Smith at 138, Wyatt Cooper defeated Cole Hartley at 152 and Josey Kelly defeated Hayden Baer at 182. Westfall also recorded a technical fall when Marcus Whaley beat Trey Haupt 21-4 at 132 pounds.

“We have a lot of juniors and seniors out right now, so that was basically a full sophomore team,” Westfall coach Will Breyer said, alluding to the Mustangs having to give up forfeits at 113, 120, 195, 220 and heavyweight. “We had only two juniors and the rest were sophomores and they did a great job.

“Wyatt Cooper stepped up at 52, Rex Brown, Josey Kelly, Marcus Whaley  — all of them are right there in that weight class and every tournament they’re getting better and are doing great.”

The gym was full of activity Wednesday as the Braves and Mustangs’ middle school and biddy league teams faced off.

The Braves will be back in action Saturday at Central Crossing High School for the Comet Classic.

“It seems every year in December and halfway into January you’re scrambling as far as trying to figure out who you are and what you’re going to do. We’re still trying to put that all together,” Daniels said. “We’ve got a couple people who are getting down to weight, a couple people are banged up and it’s all about overall peaking toward the end of February when it matters.

“I keep telling the guys that this is all practice for the end of February, the beginning of March.”

Westfall’s next step in developing its team will come at London Tuesday night.

“I think we’re at that point right now where if the upperclassmen want to step up, then we’re going to have a great season,” Breyer said.
